Senator the Hon. Conrad Enill
A s we mark our 100th anniversary of commercial petroleum production, we have much to celebrate, including a better quality of life for our people.
Our visionary forefathers presided over a fledgling initiative that has evolved into a vibrant, globally competitive petroleum industry attracting investment from multinational energy corporations from almost every continent on earth: North America, Europe, and Australia.
We have identified a number of priorities to ensure not only our continued participation in the petroleum sector but also the sustainable development of our Republic. We are pursuing:
- The development of downstream opportunities in the natural gas subsector with the potential for spin-off industries in the non-oil sectors of the economy. Here the Government has specifically targeted industries such as aluminium and plastics, among others.
- A renewable energy initiative to complement our existing resource base and provide additional business opportunities.
- Aggressive exploration and production activity in order to win more hydrocarbon resources in support of new projects aimed at leveraging our petroleum sector to deepen and widen our current manufacturing base.
- New initiatives that will ensure our sector remains intentionally competitive by reducing waste and increasing efficiency.
As we look ahead, the future of our nation grows brighter and brighter. We have determined that the development of our energy sector is not the end, but a means to an end. Our policy remains and will continue to be one that encourages the leveraging of our hydrocarbon resource base to promote growth in all segments of our economy, the non-oil and petroleum sectors alike.
