Message from the Ministry of Energy and Energy Affairs - Senator The Honourable Mr. Kevin Ramnarine
Message from the Ministry of Energy and Energy Affairs
Senator The Honourable Mr. Kevin Ramnarine, Minister of Energy and Energy Affairs
The energy sector is the mainstay of our economy and Trinidad and Tobago is well known both as a leader in the export of LNG, methanol and ammonia, and for its role in the development of the oil industry.
The main focus of the Ministry of Energy and Energy Affairs is to increase national oil production through the optimisation of oil producing acreage, most of which is held by State-owned Petrotrin. This requires an understanding of the enormous potential of heavy oil reserves and Petrotrin's conclusion of the largest local land based 3D seismic programme is critical in this regard.
Furthermore, the Ministry is focused on attracting Foreign Direct Investment through international bid rounds for open acreage and through the attraction of investment in the downstream sector. Expansion of the upstream sector will be supported by a new multi?user port at Point Galeota that will service logistical requirements of oil and gas companies.
At present the National Gas Company and its subsidiary the National Energy Company are in discussion with international investors for projects that include: the AUM II plant, Methanol to Olefins and an Iron and Steel project, among others. I have also articulated a vision for the industrial development of the South West Peninsula, which is poised for expansion centred on the Union Estate and its related infrastructure.
