IFC COULD KICKSTART NEW GROWTH IN BANKING SECTOR
A new, Government-driven, banking initiative holds such far-reaching potential, it promises to be the driving force for a multitude of other measures that will deepen and widen the local banking and financial sector.
In April 2007, the Ministry of Finance officially launched the initiative to set up an International Finance Centre (IFC) in Port of Spain at a two-day symposium. The benefits and challenges of the project to the financial and business sector were outlined at the symposium and the findings of an initial consultant’s report were disclosed. The symposium also provided a forum for the input and backing of the business sector. Consultants from Ireland, Dubai and Singapore spoke on the successes and lessons of IFCs in those countries and reported on the next steps to making the IFC a reality in Trinidad.
