When is a boom not a boom? The consultants and contractors making up Trinidad and Tobago’s construction sector might very well be able to answer that riddle if the current trends persist. Although the Government’s enormous, industry-dominating building programme continues unabated, local firms seem unlikely to benefit from all the business. Why? Much of the work is being given to foreign companies.
For the past several years, the building industry has been driven by Government’s multibillion-dollar construction initiatives. And while the programme has helped to energise an economy already boosted by tremendous oil and gas revenues, it has strained the local companies, increased inflation and been a major contributor to labour shortage.
