
Alcoa began operations in Trinidad in 1941 with its Marine Department in Port of Spain, and the transhipment of ship to barge to ship in the Gulf of Paria. Construction of Tembladora Transfer Station began in January 1948. In February 1950, Alcoa - Tembladora Transfer Station located in Carenage, started transhipping bauxite from its operation in Suriname. In 1983 Alcoa - Tembladora started handling alumina oxide only (i.e. discharging, storing and then loading out) and presently handles approximately 525,000 M.T. of alumina per year. This is shipped mainly to the USA, Canada and Europe. Alcoa is totally committed to local content and as such all Alcoa employees at Tembladora are local. Alcoa - Tembladora’s Occupational Health and Safety Policies meet international standards and we are audited by Alcoa Corporate for compliance and welcome the new Trinidad & Tobago Occupational Safety & Health Act. We are also committed to the protection of the environment and continuely strive to reduce the impact of our operation on the environment. Alcoa – Tembladora is ISO 14001 certified and has been since 2003.
