SWMCOL(Solid Waste Management Company Limited)
The Trinidad and Tobago Solid Waste Management Company Limited (SWMCOL) has more than twenty-six (26) years’ experience in environmental management. The Company has over the years established itself as a front-runner in the field of environmental enhancement and preservation, both nationally and regionally, and this activity has been encapsulated in our vision “To be the premier environmental services company in the Caribbean Region”.
SWMCOL was established by the Government of Trinidad and Tobago in November 1980 with a two-fold mandate: 1) to design and implement solid and hazardous waste management systems and structures and 2) to advise the local government body on waste management. These mandates were subsequently expanded to include the construction and management of engineered landfills, the transportation and processing of faecal waste, and the processing of recyclable materials.
Today, in addition to our original mandates, SWMCOL is committed to environmental protection partnership with our customers and has the resources to provide environmental solutions inclusive of the following services: Project Management, Hazardous and Special Waste Management, Waste Oil Recovery and Recycling, Paper and Cardboard Recovery and Recycling, Supply of Portable Chemical Toilets, Consultancy and Technical Services, General and Liquid Waste Collection and Disposal, and Construction and Maintenance of Sewage Treatment Plants. These services are extended to the public and private sectors, Non-Governmental Organizations and International Agencies based locally and regionally.
SWMCOL has, in an attempt to keep abreast of the ever-changing environmental concerns of the country, also successfully implemented programmes such as the Community-based Environmental Protection and Enhancement Programme (CEPEP), the Dead Animal Removal Team (DART) and the Disaster Emergency Response Team (DERT). These programmes are supplemented by our ongoing Public Environmental Education Campaign, geared towards schools, community groups, industries and the general public. They take the form of weekly radio programmes, as well as SWMCOL’s Philatelic and Numismatic collection which focuses on flora and fauna and the conservation of Trinidad and Tobago. SWMCOL has also hosted two E-Waste Symposia, which sought to educate both the local and regional populace on the potential hazards of E-Waste.
Our vibrant team and business sense were recognized internationally through the award of the Arch of Europe (Gold) in 2003 for our commitment to Leadership and Innovation. In 2006, SWMCOL was also presented with the International Star Award for Quality – Platinum Category, in recognition of our commitment to Quality, Leadership, Technology and Innovation.
SWMCOL, the premier environmental services company of the Caribbean, is always seeking to expand its operations through the creation of new opportunities in environmental and waste management services and is always seeking strategic business alliances to capitalize on the many opportunities that are available in the Region.
