
The Environmental Management Authority (EMA)
The Environmental Management Authority is a statutory body established by the government of Trinidad and Tobago in June 1995 under the Environmental Management Act.
The Act provides for the making and enforcement of subsidiary environmental legislation which are intended to address specific environmental issues.
The EMA’s five pieces of Subsidiary legislation presently in force are:
The Certificate of Environmental Clearance (CEC) Rules, 2001
The Noise Pollution Control Rules, 2001
The Environmentally Sensitive Area (ESA) Rules, 2001
The Environmentally Sensitive Species (ESS) Rules, 2001
The Water Pollution (Amendment) Rules 2006, and Water Pollution (Fees) (Amendment) Regulations, 2006
The EMA has also been working on legislation for:
The Beverage Container Bill, (Draft)
The Air Pollution Rules, 2006 (Draft)
The EMA is committed to protecting and conserving the natural environment to enhance the quality of life by promoting environmentally responsible behaviour, especially through its education programmes.
