Telecommunications Services of Trinidad & Tobago (TSTT)

Taking Telecommunications Into Tomorrow

Telecommunications Services of Trinidad & Tobago (TSTT) is the only full-service telecom provider in the nation, but the company’s merit goes far beyond the services it provides. Over the last two years they have embarked on a visionary communications strategy that is contributing towards the development of Trinidad & Tobago into an Information Society.

COMPANY OVERVIEW

TSTT was formed On January 1, 1991 through the merger of the Trinidad & Tobago Telephone Company (TELCO) and the Trinidad & Tobago External Telecommunications Company Ltd (TELEX). Two parties – the Government of Trinidad & Tobago (with a 51 per cent stake) and regional telecom firm Cable & Wireless (with the remaining 49 per cent) – share ownership of the company.

In recent years Trinidad & Tobago has carried out a steady and progressive deregulation of the telecom sector, bringing competition into mobile and Internet service provision. TSTT however has adapted to the competitive environment and not only leads market share in both areas, but is the only operator providing a full suite of land, mobile, data and broadband services to local and international customers.

CATALYST FOR DEVELOPMENT

Globally telecommunications are being recognised as a major tool in the social and economic development of societies, and within Trinidad & Tobago TSTT has taken on this role through major improvements to its infrastructure and partnership with the Government in its development strategy.

Starting in the second half of 2007 TSTT overhauled its broadband Internet offering, drastically increasing speeds and lowering prices. This measure alone will lead to a great increase in Internet usage, knowledge and business opportunity.

The company is working with the Government of Trinidad and Tobago to provide a modern communications network upon which e-government initiatives will be built to provide island-wide access to online government services.

TSTT has also evolved from telephone and data networks to a multimedia platform. This new multimedia platform enables seamless service access for customers. The Next Generation Network allows TSTT to further broaden its offerings and offer customised solutions for enterprise, SME and residential markets.

Expansion and investment in TSTT’s mobile network continues apace with the company reaching 99 per cent of areas in Trinidad & Tobago. Content and multimedia services, MMS, international SMS and roaming services have also been deployed.

THE TSTT FOUNDATION

The TSTT Foundation was established in 2005 with the mission of creating an agency dedicated to corporate social responsibility. The Foundation’s focus is on four key areas – sport, culture, health and education. It operates under the theme: “Shaping the future together”.

In March of 2008, the Foundation embarked upon a comprehensive employee volunteerism programme, aimed at bringing its over 2,500 workers into its corporate citizenship efforts.
