In Trinidad and Tobago, statistics reveal that thirty (30%) of ever-partnered women have experienced physical and/or sexual violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime.[1] This reality affects workplace productivity, shatters the safety of homes, and violates the fundamental rights of those who nurture life.

The Trinidad and Tobago Coalition Against Domestic Violence (CADV) has been a beacon of hope since 1985, offering essential services to victims, including clinical therapy, legal consultations, case management, and emergency support. CADV is the only organization in the country to have consistently offered this range of free support and critical services for the past forty (40) years. 

The CADV is a registered charity with the Board of Inland Revenue. It independently funds its operations via events, grants, deeds of covenant and sponsorship.

On December 4, 2024, the Coalition Against Domestic Violence will be honoured to host The Honourable Justice Frank Seepersad as the keynote speaker at its inaugural Solidarity Dinner, themed “The Journey of a Survivor.” The CADV is equally privileged to welcome Mrs. Tot Lampkin, who will deliver a special address to attendees at the Hyatt Regency Trinidad.

Mrs. Lampkin is the mother of Samantha Isaacs, whose tragic death in 2017 propelled her into a courageous fight for justice. Her landmark constitutional case, supported by The Honourable Justice Robin Mohammed’s judgment, held that the failure of those responsible for protection and service directly impacted the rights of her daughter and her family.

In his ruling, Justice Mohammed described the insidious nature of domestic violence, noting how abusers manipulate vulnerability into control.

Mrs. Lampkin, who is raising her daughter’s young son since Samantha’s passing, shared that while the ruling cannot bring back her daughter, it has provided peace of mind and a sense of justice. In her words:

“I wish it could help other women because I know many who are crying out for help but aren’t getting it. I am feeling good that justice has been served. This would not bring back my daughter but at least it will give peace of mind and pave a better way for her son.”

At the same event, Justice Frank Seepersad, one of our youngest judges, will provide the keynote address. His Lordship has been a longstanding advocate for holistic reform on the issue of domestic violence that include resetting of misogynistic attitudes that have become culturally entrenched.
