At the movie premiere of the 60th edition of its Sports Awards on Sunday March 26th, the Movie Towne Theatre was a hive of activity as the First Citizens Sports Foundation honoured Trinidad and Tobago’s sporting stars.

Senator, the Honourable Randall Mitchell, Minister of Tourism, Culture, and the Arts and Acting Minister of Sport and Community Development, was present to crown Teniel Campbell, Sportswoman of the Year 2022, and Jereem Richards, Sportsman of the Year 2022, who were represented by Euphemia Huggins and Britney Richards-Nelson, respectively. Also being celebrated on the evening were Phoebe Sandy, Youth Sportswoman and Nikoli Blackman Youth Sportsman, rounding off the winning line up from over sixty top performing athletes across over seventeen different sport disciplines.

The event, titled “Passing the Baton – Inspired by History; Creating Legacy,” showcased athletes on the big screen like their favourite movie stars, as well as their older counterparts who played a key role in preparing the way for their generation.  Not to be outdone, nine sporting figures and one team were inducted into the Foundation’s Sports Hall of Fame, joining a lengthy list of renowned local sporting personalities.

The Honourable Shamfa Cudjoe, Minister of Sport and Community Development, stated on behalf of her Ministry in the pre-recorded interviews presented during the screening of the movie, “First Citizens has been committed to the cause of celebrating sporting excellence and the achievement of our athletes…and has always been of great assistance to both the sporting community and the government.”

“More work in this arena lies ahead of us,” remarked Karen Darbasie, Group CEO, “as sport continues to be a discipline with immense potential to address the plethora of social ills prevalent today, as well as build a healthy populace for tomorrow.”  We are hopeful that the Foundation’s contribution, in partnership with its affiliate organizations, will allow us to work together to advance global sustainable development goals and assure a sporting future of which Trinidad and Tobago can be proud. The premiere was afterwards shown on CNC3, bringing the excitement of the First Citizens Sports Awards production to screens across the country in honour of our national sporting heroes’ great contributions.
