HRMATT hosted a Media Launch for its inaugural ‘HR Legacy Awards’ gala at the Hyatt Regency, Port of Spain (POS) on Wednesday, 21st September 2022. His Worship, Alderman Joel Martinez, Mayor of Port of Spain attended along with HRMATT’s partners, sponsors, past and current Board members, and key media personnel.


Public Relations Officer, Mr. Desmond Lawrence, chaired the evening’s proceedings and set the tone for the awards event which aims to recognize and celebrate the efforts of our foundational local HR professionals.

HRMATT’s first ever Vice President (VP), Mr. Glen Wilson, then hosted a ‘TikTok’ version of HRMATT’s 33-year history. He heralded the visionary leadership of the organization’s founder, the late Gordon Draper, in establishing the association as an HR community of practice. He touted the work of the founding Board, including the development of HRMATT’s constitution, and the creation of HRMATT’s logo by Mr. L. Anthony Watkins.


Mayor Martinez brought ‘International Peace Day’ greetings to all and indicated that the national watchwords – Discipline, Production and Tolerance – fall under the remit of HR professionals as we shape and develop the way we work now and in the future. HRMATT’s President, Mrs. Cavelle Joseph St. Omer, set the stage for the inaugural HR Legacy Awards carded for Sunday, 27th November 2022. She referenced the saying “A prophet has no honour in his or her name” and signalled the necessity of honouring and celebrating our own HR pioneers and visionaries.

HRMATT’s VP, Ms. Lara Quentrall-Thomas, then identified the 7 awards to be distributed at the event: ‘The Maxine Barnett Award’ for HR Excellence’; ‘The Glen Wilson Award’ for IR Excellence; ‘The Gordon Draper Award’ for Transformation; ‘The Lisa James Award’ for Learning and Development; ‘The Coreen Jones Award’ for the Best Place to Work; ‘The L. Anthony Watkins Award’ for Advocacy, and HRMATT’s ‘Outstanding Volunteer Award’.

Poet Zakiya Gill performed a riveting spoken word piece in honour of our legacy HR Professionals. Tiffany Munroe, Senior HRO from brand partner, Label House Group also gave her remarks. Ms. Antonia Ferrier, HRMATT’s Treasurer closed the event by thanking all in attendance, particularly His Worship Mayor Martinez, past and current board members and invited media personnel and guests.
