Spotlight On Success: Filmmakers Collaborative of Trinidad and Tobago’s Applauds YFL/24 Achievements

The Filmmakers Collaborative of Trinidad and Tobago (FILMCO) proudly concludes its second annual Young Filmmakers Lab (YFL/24), a transformative 12-week programme dedicated to empowering youth with film and storytelling skills. In partnership with esteemed sponsors and community organizations, YFL/24 has successfully bridged the gap between creativity and career opportunities in the television and film industry for young individuals aged 16-21.
Launched on February 24, 2024, with an engaging orientation session hosted at the UWI Film Programme, YFL/24 welcomed 30 participants from across Trinidad and Tobago. The programme was tailored for youth affiliated with approved organizations including SERVOL, the Heroes Foundation, the St. James Police Youth Club, Mayaro Secondary School, and Tobago Library Services. Over the course of the programme, participants from diverse locales such as Point Fortin, Cedros, Morvant, Mayaro, Arima, Siparia, and Tobago immersed themselves in comprehensive film education and practical training.
Under the guidance of industry practitioners, participants explored all facets of filmmaking, including Crew and Production Stages, Production Teams & Development, Documentary Interviews, Camera, Lights & Sound, and Editing. The programme’s hands-on approach ensured that participants developed essential skills and knowledge, paving the way for future apprenticeships in the industry.
The culmination of YFL/24 was celebrated on June 15, 2024, at the House of Angostura, where participants showcased five short films produced during the programme. The event marked a significant milestone for the young filmmakers, highlighting their dedication and creativity.
10% of YFL/24 Participants Secured Paid JAVA Internships
Notable successes emerged from the programme as ten percent of YFL/24 participants secured paid internships in the television and advertising industries. Ian Mayhew, a standout participant from SERVOL, received an internship at the TV6 Newsroom. Khanisha Parris and Akeilah Jerome embarked on internships with the renowned McCann advertising agency. Each intern also received a $1,200.00 gift certificate from J&K Signature Styles for workwear.
Furthermore, Sarai-ann Forde of the Heroes Foundation achieved a merit scholarship to study Film and Media Arts at Temple University in the USA, As one of the top performers in YFL/24, Sarai-ann consistently achieved top marks in all quizzes, showcasing her exceptional talent and dedication.
