Supermarket Association CEO steps down

Amrika Teelucksingh, CEO of the Supermarket Association of Trinidad and Tobago (SATT), has announced that her last day in office will be 30th September.
She expressed her sincere gratitude to the Supermarket Association for the opportunity to serve as CEO since 2024, noting that being selected for the role was one of the great privileges of her career.
Teelucksingh further noted that despite the inherent competitiveness among members, she had witnessed a shared genuine and consistent commitment to community reflected in the daily contributions and support that supermarkets, distributors, and manufacturers provide to social and community causes across the nation. She stated that she had been especially moved by the industry’s mobilisation in times of national celebration and crisis, seeing firsthand the speed and humanity with which the industry responded to local and regional disasters.
Throughout her tenure as CEO, Teelucksingh listed the several strategic initiatives that she led:
Formalising Association Processes: Formalising many of the Association’s internal processes, communications, and governance structures.
Website and Membership Renewals: Rebuilding the Association’s website (satt.org.tt) and introducing online membership registration and renewal, as part of a broader effort to strengthen and streamline communication within the network.
Industry Awards: Streamlining the award criteria, nomination processes, and voting procedures for the annual industry awards, incorporating stakeholder feedback to ensure they better reflect and serve the wider industry.
Advocacy and Representation: Representing the industry’s interests directly, including leading calls for greater efficiency in the annual liquor licence renewal process, and rebuilding strong working relationships with key government ministries and agencies, including the Ministry of Health, and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Tourism, Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Ministry of the People, Social Development and Family Services, Ministry of Finance, OSHA, TTBS, TTPS, Customs and Excise Division, Members of the Diplomatic Corps and so many others.
Supporting the SME Network: Building on the foundation laid by SATT in 2023 with its inaugural Food and Beverage (FAB) event, the organisation returned in August 2025 with the Caribbean Food and Beverage Trade Show (CFB), held at the Centre of Excellence. That event featured over 70 participants, including 30 SMEs and Micro-SMEs, and created a space where exhibitors could connect not only with supermarket purchasing teams, but with representatives from the Ministry of Health and regulatory agencies. This event saw traditional retail partners and industry leaders step forward and take on mentorship roles, sharing their business insights and experience with up-and-coming entrepreneurs through workshops and panel sessions.
This year, in direct response to feedback that SMEs and micro-SMEs needed a space of their own, SATT has organised a dedicated satellite event for this segment. In partnership with the Ministry of Trade’s ‘Buy Local, Build Trinbago’ campaign and EXIM Bank, SATT will be hosting a Caribbean Food & Beverage SME Market taking place at the C3 Centre on Saturday, 12th September, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
The Supermarket Association is also approaching its constitutionally required election to be held on 12th September. Teelucksingh personally thanked the current Board and leadership of SATT – in particular, President Mr. Biondi Bachew, Mr. Kevin Kissoon – VP Projects and Mr. Heeranand Maharaj – PRO, for their guidance, openness to feedback and honest counsel.
Teelucksingh also extended sincere thanks to the SATT team, particularly Project Manager Risa Balkaran and former Administrative and Membership Coordinator Sacha Jagroop.
